Average Time Spent by a Lévy Flyer on an Interval with Absorbing Boundaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider a Lévy flyer that starts from a point x0 on an interval [O,L] with absorbing boundaries. Using fractional differential equations, we show that the average number of flights the flyer takes before it is absorbed is 2(πα)−1 sin(πα/2) [ x0(L− x0)l −2 0 ]α/2 , where 0 < α < 2 and l0 > 0 are the parameters of the distribution of the flight length l: P (|l| > r) = (l0/r) α, r > l0, and l0 is a small number with respect to x0 and L− x0. For α > 2, when the second moment of the flight length distribution exists, our result is replaced by known results of classical diffusion. We also find a closed form expression for the total length of the flights before absorption, and show that it can be well approximated by the product of the average number of flights and the average length of the flight started at x0. We show that when x0 is small comparatively to L, the average total length has a minimum at α = 1. We discuss the relevance of this result to the problem of foraging, which has received recent attention in the statistical physics literature.

Average time spent by Lévy flights and walks on an interval with absorbing boundaries.
We consider a Lévy flyer of order alpha that starts from a point x(0) on an interval [O,L] with absorbing boundaries. We find a closed-form expression for the average number of flights the flyer takes and the total length of the flights it travels before it is absorbed. These two quantities are equivalent to the mean first passage times for Lévy flights and Lévy walks, respectively. Using fract...
متن کاملThe Allocated Time to Activities of Daily Living Based on the Day of the Week, Age and Gender in Typically Developing Children Under 5 Year Old
Abstract: Activities of daily living are activities that are formed in order to take care of the body and are essential for life and well-being and fundamental survival. These activities begin in infancy and are modified at different stages of development. Cultural values, parental expectations, social routines, and the physical environment influence daily activities. Concerns about children's ...
متن کاملFlyer Velocity Characteristics of the Laser-driven Miniflyer System
The laser-driven MiniFlyer system is used to launch a small, thin flyer plate for impact on a target. Consequently, it is an indirect drive technique that de-couples the shock from the laser beam profile. The flyer velocity can be controlled by adjustment of the laser energy. The upper limits on the flyer velocity involve the ability of the substrate window to transmit the laser light without a...
متن کاملMultiple attribute group decision making with linguistic variables and complete unknown weight information
Interval type-2 fuzzy sets, each of which is characterized by the footprint of uncertainty, are a very useful means to depict the linguistic information in the process of decision making. In this article, we investigate the group decision making problems in which all the linguistic information provided by the decision makers is expressed as interval type-2 fuzzy decision matrices where each of ...
